Dental Crowns

What Are Dental Crowns? When Are They Recommended?

A crown is a restoration used to cover a prepared tooth that has been weakened, chipped, decayed, or broken. An all-ceramic crown is made of the highest-quality cosmetic material designed to closely resemble the translucence of your natural teeth.

Crowns are most commonly recommended after root canal treatment or when a large filling wears out. Our teeth are subject to tremendous pressures. Crowns provide strength, protect the tooth against breakage, and create a foundation for a beautiful smile.

How Long Should the Procedure Take?

  1. First, Dr. Dragos will remove any decay from the tooth, prepare the tooth and take an impression. Between office visits, our laboratory creates your custom ceramic crown according to specific details about your smile. Dr. Dragos will also fit your tooth with a natural-appearing temporary crown.
  2. In the second visit, Dr. Dragos will remove the temporary and bond the permanent tooth crown.

What Are the Differences between All the Different Types of Crowns?

The major difference is that each type of crown is used based on your tooth structure and cosmetic importance. Each crown has unique features, advantages, and disadvantages. Please note, Dr. Dragos will always discuss each available option at your initial consultation.

Full Porcelain

Porcelain veneers are often praised for their natural and life-life appearance. Porcelain material is resistant to staining and is often the top-choice for a cosmetic tooth crown.

Every material has its own benefits and potential drawbacks, and porcelain crowns are no exception. For example, porcelain is hard enough to eventually damage opposing teeth, if the patient is a chronic tooth grinder. Additionally, a thin layer of porcelain, comparable to the thickness of a gold crown, can also break against strong chewing forces. This means that more healthy tooth structure may need to be removed to ensure that the long-lasting porcelain crown stays intact for many years.

Benefits of Full Porcelain

  • The most natural and cosmetically appealing result
  • Good for patients who are temperature sensitive
  • Good for patients with metal allergies

Potential Drawbacks of Porcelain

  • Fractures more easily than other material
  • Requires removal of more healthy tooth structure

Cubic Zirconia

Zirconia is a popular choice for an all-ceramic crown and many other procedures. In addition to its value in dental restorations, zirconia can often be found in other medical applications, including artificial joints.  One of the reasons that zirconia is used so often is its strength and durability. Zirconia can also be identically color-matched to your natural teeth, so no one will know the difference!

Benefits of Zirconia

  • Lasts longer than any other crown material
  • Translucent and blend with existing dentistry
  • Good for patients with metal allergies

Potential Drawbacks of Porcelain

  • Fractures more easily than other material
  • Requires removal of more healthy tooth structure
